Our First Home, The most desired home, the most waited home– for most of us, it is that particular space which we’ve always dreamed about buying, ever since we held our first pay cheque! First homes are exceptional, and while we do our best to design it just the way we imagined, there are specific, Do’s and Don’ts that should be kept in mind while planning the décor for your first home that can work in the long run. Do Think about the Design
Keep in mind that the interiors of the home can look different than what you had imagined. Re-think, improvise and decorate based on what you want the space to exude; a cosy rustic setting with pale pastels and sufficient space to lounge around or a more formal structured approach, where the home, furniture and muted décor combines a sense of formality and casualness. It also depends on the lifestyle you live.
2. Avoid Temptation with White
Tempting as it may be, white should not be the first option, if your home has children or pets. White upholstery and white walls are classic and versatile, but except for miraculously packing them up out of bounds, it is impossible to keep away dust and grime from messing them up.
3. Break the Monotony With Colours
Use colour as a way to break the monotony and in smaller spaces. Rather than decorating a large room in brilliant colours which can sometimes seem overwhelming, use stark colours in smaller areas that you pass through. Painting a foyer or pantry in a dramatic tone will make the whole house look cheery and colourful.
4. Don’t Buy New Furniture
Go buying new furniture without a thought, when you can buy larger pieces second-hand. Aside from keeping your budget in control, it will also help accommodate any style changes as the years go. New homes go through a lot of metamorphoses as the years pass, and furniture tends to get dated and redundant as they age.
5. Be Quirky
Play around with a room and its décor. Begin by starting with a functional furniture layout, and then throw in elements that can loosen it up. A bright painting, a contemporary footstool, a quirky Mirror, these lend playfulness to space without keeping it too formulaic.
6. Spent Wisely
Be scared to spend exorbitantly on some pieces that you love. Although it might scrape your pockets a bit, splurging on these can lend identity to space, and can take the room to a different level altogether.
7. Be Attentive
Pay extra attention to doorways and entrances. Spend a little more time and money on crafting great doors for entries. Keep the openings as high as possible and comprehensive. Large halls are inviting, open and add grandeur to space.
8. Don’t Ignore your instincts
As the saying goes, “Always trust your gut. It knows what your head hasn’t yet figured out”. Our home reflects what we are, and each of our perspectives is different. It is perfectly alright to try out and experiment within the space. This will all reflect in the uniqueness of your homes.
